Our story began with
the frustrating realization that dairy-free frozen dessert selections
are limited to soy and rice based ingredients. Amanda Shallcross, ND,
naturopathic physician and co-founder of Sid Wiggy’s, has extensively
researched and observed from her clinical experience, the
allergenic nature of soy-based food products and the high glycemic index of soy and rice
based frozen desserts.
The skinny on coconut milk... Coconut milk is a creamy, non-dairy, cholesterol-free product made up of medium-chain triglycerides identical to those found in human breast milk. Medium-chain triglycerides have been shown to have anti-microbial properties, and as a stable fat, have proven to be an antioxidant. Coconut fat (unlike other types of fat) is easily digestible and can speed metabolism. What is agave nectar? Agave nectar is a natural, highly sweet syrup produced from a succulent plant known as Agave Tequila which grows in Mexico. It is approximately 1.4 times sweeter than sugar but has a lower glycemic index because of its higher proportion of fructose and lower levels of glucose. Fructose does not stimulate insulin secretion like other sugars do so it does not create what is commonly referred to as a “sugar rush.” From a metabolic perspective, low glycemic index foods are important for athletes, diabetics and individuals who are interested in losing weight.
